Professional Profile of John C. Flanagan,
L.C.S.W.
John Flanagan is a tall, slender and kindly sixty-three-year-old
man who has been in practice for thirty-five years. In spite
of his longevity he has a youthful, open and dynamic spirit.
He has a warm, personable and present style and a high comfort
level with a broad diversity of people. He is able to confront
his client's issues in a way that is both supportive and thought
provoking.
He
received his Master of Social Work degree from Portland State
University in 1969. Since that time he has worked in a wide
variety of settings including, early in his career, a family
service agency with a broad-spectrum caseload, giving him
some of his initial experiences in working with children,
adolescents, adults, and the elderly, and with individuals,
couples, groups, and families. The bulk of his career has
been spent in doing therapy with adolescents, adults, couples
and groups. He also worked from 1979 to 1988 in medical social
work in hospitals and home health agencies doing hospice counseling
and care management. He has been in full time private practice
since 1988. He has taken an appalling number of continuing
education courses in a wide variety of subjects.
He currently specializes primarily in working with adults
who experienced traumatic abuse or neglect as children. In
addition to individual and couples therapy, he also leads
therapy groups for people dealing with these special issues.
Although this is his area of focus, he is experienced and
capable in helping with a large variety of other mental health
and relationship issues.
